Green Initiative

Growing up around and living on Saskatchewan farm land gave me my eco-consiousness long before I really understood what it actually meant or how greatly is would affect us all.  My grandmothers and mother had always taught me to compost, grow both vegetable and flower gardens, recycle everything, preserve and can our own organic food and of course not to litter which I now teach my children.  I firmly remember my grandmother calling me outside mid-summer to show me her first Begonia bloom that year.  Being only 7 years old, I didn't exactly understand her enthusiasm until I that the opportunity to grow my very own garden.  When I saw my very first tomato plant grow from a tiny little seed into a flowering beauty, I was too hooked and now could appreciate my grandmother's enthusiasm.  I catch myself taking my family out every year to show them my first blooms.

At Platinum Floral Designs, we are taking every measure possible to only put back into the earth what is bio-degradable.  Our initiatives include:  degradable cellophane, naturally died and degradable cotton ribbon, recycled glass vases, using local and natural mosses, bark, twigs, drift wood, shells, rocks and whatever else we can conjure up to include into our designs.

We grow our own organic flower garden and use every single bloom, offering only the freshest, longest lasting and of course pesticide free (sniff proof) flowers.  What we cannot grow we source out through other local organic growers right here on the island.  We try to promote in season flowers as much as possible, only shipping in when needed.  What we cannot find growing here on the island, the mainland is where many of the roses and other in season flowers grow.

In the studio we recycle everything, reuse vases, we compost all living matter and re-use card board boxes for deliveries.  Nothing is wasted and everything re-used.  We also are now offering another option for clients who are using their florals for one day.  Often a bride will give her bouquet away, or perhaps freeze-dry it, however many of them don't do anything.  Instead, our brides have the option of returning their florals, where we can re-cut the stems, re-arrange the flowers and send them to hospitals or woman relief centers as donations.

Platinum Floral Designs will continue to source out other eco-friendly options and continue our goal to waste nothing and to re-use everything!
